Causes:
It is believed that these afflictons are caused by supernatural beings angered by the afflicted person. These entities or so-called the mangkalat/busaw may also curse them for no apparent reason.
Materials:
The infusion of andalamay plant (Boehmeria cypholophoidesMerr.) placed in a glass of water gives the diagnosis of this condition. If the water turns to red, it would mean the patient is (+) positive of pigbunuon sa mangkalat. If there is no change in color, it means the patient only has fever.
Management:
The following herbal plants and different methods or manipulations are utilized in preventing and treating this conditon: Andalamay (Boehmeria cypholophoides Merr.). The andalamay plant is used in diagnosis and at the same time treating this kind of affliction. Just drink the infusion until the afflicton is gone. Kakolo na ido (Elephantopus?mollis Kunth). Subject a whole vine of the plant to an open flame until slightly burnt. Then apply the burnt part directly on the affected areas of the body. Kamugna (Acorus calamus L., A. graminaeus Aiton). Gather a handful of mature leaves and then burn it. Expose the patient to the smoke prduced by the burned leaves ( same as incense). Kamugna could also be used for protection of pregnant women against an attack of a mangkalat. Pound a sufficient amount of kamugna and apply it on the abdomen of the mother to protect the baby. Another protection from busaw or mangkalat attack is the use of Mangimbae plant(Typha sp. ). Obtain about two handfuls of mature leaves. Subject it to fire then use as an incense. Make sure every part of the house is incensed. Taginosa {Villebrunea rubescens (Blume) Blume}. Scrape the roots then boil the scraped roots in one glass of water then drink the decoction until affliction is gone. Tambabasi. Obtain either the root or a white fiber of the plant. Boil the part in a glass of water or pound it until juice comes out. Then, use the decoction as a compress or apply the pounded saha or roots as a poultice on the affected part. Lastly, gather mature leaves of Ulango, Manimba-e (Typha sp. ), roots of Gan (Moghania strobilifera (L.) St. Hil), and the fruit/white part of Dengan plant. Combine the different parts then scorch to the fire. Use as an incense, exposing the patient to the smoke. Do it repeatedly until the patients feels better.
